Default Transmission Holding Gears Too Long

i was wondering if anyone could help me. i have 2003 range rover HSE and my transmission i switching to a mode where it holds gears until it reaches in excess of 4500 rpm. and then has aggressive downshifting as well (ie down shifting at 3500 rpm) if i turn the engine off and wait a while the transmission will reset and change gears normally for a short period of time (5 min) and then it will revert back to an aggressive shift pattern. Anyone have any ideas? thanks Much.

Sounds like might be something sticking in the tranny valve body, might be a real good time for drain and refill, filter change. So many things inside are depending on pressure, so turning off the engine removes that, allows reset, then it comes back. The RAVE manual has a pretty good explanation of things for the automatic gearbox, I am too timid to venture into that part of the machine on my own. Some users would suggst some form of tranny solvent fix as well just prior to the drain out. Opinions vary on that quite a bit. Before you drain, make sure you will be able to remove the pan to change filter. Some Rovers have to take out a cross member.

When did you last check your fluid level and condition of the fluid.? When was it last serviced? It is in trouble so get it to a tranny shop ASAP before it fails.

This totally sounds like it is going into sport mode.
Have your battery and charging system checked.
If the battery voltage is to low it will mess with your transmission.
With a electronically controlled transmission you always start with the battery and charging system.

Thanks for the input. The fluids were changed last week and the oil was very dark. Maybe the change to the new oil prompted a longstanding problem to surface. Will look into it. Thanks Again.
