Default Won't Start - Please Help!

Alright experts. Just picked up a 2002 Disco SE with 120k. Drove it for one day and it performed perfectly. The next day I drove it a short 5 miles and smoke was coming from under the hood. The photo provides the unit which was smoking. I drive the 5 miles miles home and park her. 2 hours later I go to start it and it won't turn over. I try to jump it and it won't accept the charge. What is that unit that was smoking and why won't she fire up?

That is your A/C compressor. If it was smoking, the clutch is probably seized and the pulley is not spinning. I am rather surprised your belt is still intact. That said, if the belt isnt moving freely and turning the other things like the alternator, your battery is going to be the only thing powering your vehicle which is why it is now dead. Did your temperature gauge go up on the ride home?

When it first fired up after seeing the smoke, the oil light was on but it only stayed on for about 30 seconds and oil levels were checked. After it went out I was nervous about overheating so I watched the temp the whole 5 mile trip home and it did not rise. Would the air con compressor wheel spin manually when the engine is off? I cant imagine the belt would have survived if the unit was fully seized. There is also some dried black spray on surrounding units which I can only think is melted plastic from the air con wheel. Thank you for your help.
