Default 2009 Fob won't eject from dash

Hello, our 2009 LR2 key fob inserts into the dash without issue but for unknown reason it won't eject without using brute force to remove it.

When it is removed forcefully, it acts as though the key is still in and will start or just remain with ignition on.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this happen and what the issue might be with it

Most of the time (but not always) it means there's gunk in there that's interfering with the mechanism. You could try electronic component cleaning spray to flush it and see if that removes the gunk. You could also try a spray lubricant (NOT WD-40, THAT IS NOT A LUBRICANT AND WILL ONLY MAKE IT WORSE) to see if that will help as well.

Otherwise you have to replace the receiver, it's expensive and can only be done at a dealer because it has to be programmed/configured.

You might try a spray can of Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner available at all auto parts stores, along with some Q-tips.

Thanks so much for the good info. I'll have to take a look at this and see about cleaning it out. From what I saw before, it was seemingly fine but will have to check more thoroughly.

Why is a fob used and not a key?

On the LR2 the FOB is the key.

I know. But it seems like a troublesome part and expensive to replace. Why did Land Rover use a fob instead of a key? Is a Fob better?

Nobody says to replace the FOB. It's the receiver where you put the FOB to start the car that is malfunctioning. With a key the result would be the same if the lock was not working. The portion of the FOB that authorizes the car to allow itself to be started almost never fails. Only the battery in the FOB to operate the button functions fails and can be replaced.

This particular issue is probably because dirt, grease or other crud that was on the FOB accumulated over time inside the receiver and must be cleaned out.

The receiver was checked and it appears to not have an excess amount of dirt or grime in it. Going to check again to see but it seems strange that it inserts without issue but only ejection is of issue

Is the FOB original or third party? Did you clean the outside of the FOB to remove any surface grime?

Like I said, it may also be that the receiver needs to be replaced.
