Default Any Advice on buying an '08 LR2?

Hi there,

I'm considering purchasing an LR2. There are a couple in my price range to chose from. I'm wondering if there are any potential major issues that I should be aware of, or have my mechanic look at, before I take the Rover plunge.

Feedback much appreciated!

Frank,
Toronto

I have a 2008 LR2 with 60K miles. I can't think of any major issues or special concerns, but you can potentially have three expenses ahead of you:

1) Scheduled service at the dealership. I heard that Carfax shows you the dealer service. If this is true, then check Carfax to see if regular service was performed or if you have to do any catch-up service. If you check Carfax, please post back and let us know if it actually provides this information as I'm not sure. If you are purchasing from an LR dealer, they might be able to lookup the service history by VIN.

2) Brakes are expensive on this vehicle. They replace the rotor at the same time the pads are replaced. So you want to have an idea of how soon you'll need a brake job.

3) Tires. Check the tread remaining so you'll have an idea of how soon you'll need new tires. These large tires are expensive.

Hope this helps.

We also have a 2008 with 86K miles, and a 2010 with 26K miles. When driving I cannot tell any difference between the two, which is a testament to how well they are built. We had an issue with the fuel gauge sending unit not long after we got it. We also had to swap out the alternator several times, which I hope is resolved now. Lastly, we've experienced some starting issues in hot weather, which I've been told is a software issue. But I say jump in and Rove!

We have a 2008 with 64K and this thing is amazing! Climbed up mountains in NC with it and then to the beach all while getting 25mpg hwy! Only issue was a HDC fault and software updated fixed it! Now Im looking to add an LR3 to my collection as well! Service then and they will last a LONG time!

Hey Frank,

I would recommend looking at a 2009 - there are a few little changes that always happen subseqent to the first model year that make the future ones better. The biggest one I'd say is the leather used on the seats - my 2008 is now experiencing some serious cracking in the driver's seat leather and I expect that's why they modified it in newer models. I'm also having problems with paint wearing off and rusting around the rear plastic hatch release - I think the design of it has also changed.

I have a 2008 LR2 with 30,000 miles. Love this car. It needs tires and I am finding them expensive and not easy to find. I would like to add navigation.

btw, Carfax does show some service records. When I buy a used car, I get both Carfax and AutoCheck.

Sounds like an LR2 is good for a Land Rover newb. I love the LR3, but its looking like an LR2 will be more owner friendly.
