Default Any tips on radiator R&R?

Anybody replaced their radiator on their LR2? Mine's got a drip-drip-drip slow leak. Bought a new radiator. I know the service manual sucks for instructions and often tells you to do things the hard way, such as the instructions to change a fender/wing -- removing the bumper is NOT required.

Any tips you want to share to make the radiator job easier?

I had mine replaced recently at an independent specialty shop that works on a lot of rovers and other British cars. My radiator was leaking at a crimp/seam (aluminum <> plastic) near the fill cap. They removed the bumper for access. They did not have to remove the intake manifold. While it was off and they had easy access, also replaced the upper hose, lower hose, and thermostat as preventive maintenance (145K miles).

This probably isn't the tip you wanted to hear, but sharing what I know. Good luck!

Actually, this is precisely what I was looking for. I've seen videos of this but they all show having to remove the intake manifold. And the suggestion of R&R the two hoses and thermostat is also the kind of tip I am looking for. Thanks!

Hey, Meinike says it will take all day to do that work. $1000 labor. What did your shop charge you for labor?

$558 for labor. They told me that the heavy lifting was to replace the radiator, but once it was removed it was quick and easy to replace the other items. I don't recall their hourly rate but their labor charge puts this around 3+ hours of work. The techs at this independent shop are former employees of a LR dealership, so they are familiar with the vehicle.

Post back and let us know how it goes.

Parts are genuine OEM:

RADIATOR LR039530 1.0 @ $541.90
UPPER RAD HOSE LR000931 1.0 @ $50.78
THERMOSTAT LR006071 1.0 @ $96.88
LOWER RAD HOSE LR007413 1.0 @ $58.35

I live in an area where most people have more money than time, so we end up paying the high end of retail. This would have been a good DIY project for cost savings but it was beyond my capability.

Oof. I had a pretty good idea these people are trying to take me for a ride. Thanks. If I can find a way to vacuum the old fluid and then fill with new i will do it myself.
