Default Brand new with a ?

Hi all,

I am brand new to the site and the world of LR!

I am in the process of purchasing my first 2008 LR2 but had a ? I was hoping someone could assist me with:

1 owner corporate vehicle with 55K miles on it, and after reviewing the carfax, it looks like it has had a Cooling system hose replaced, Rear brakes replaced, Radio replaced & Battery replaced already. No accidents.

My question is if I purchase this, what other replacements might be coming up in the next 10k? 20k? 30k? miles

Also, should I shoot for a warranty if I can get one?

I appreciate the help and look forward to speaking with you all more, thanks!

Engine. Search around, not a favorite of the factory mechanics. Warranty yes if fine print actually lets you get anything out of it.

Engine? I've never heard of anyone having engine issues with LR2s or the Volvos in which the same 3.2 reside.

Differentials are the only thing I've heard issues with, and those failures tend to be spotty. A lot of people will Google the issues and come on here to discuss them, but I don't get the sense that it's as widespread as some would think.

I've replaced the battery in my 2008. By the time a car is 4-5 years old, replacing a battery is normal. By 55K miles it could be time for a brake job, too. It's actually probably a good thing the rears have been done, so you'll only be on the hook for the fronts. These two sound to me like regular maintenance items rather than parts that broke.

A hose and the radio replaced? I've never heard either being identified as widespread issues, but I guess it can happen.

If you end up buying the vehicle, my suggestion would be to use synthetic oil with this engine rather than regular old dino oil. You can get away with the 7500 mile OCI but I personally like to do every 5000 miles. I'm a "better safe than sorry" type, and the higher OCIs were done more to placate the EPA than to benefit the engine, IMO.

I hear about the differentials going out but it seems they go around 30k from what I have read. What would the warranty cover? It may be worth it if it covers everything for 5years 50k. I would check the front breaks though, generally the fronts go before the rear. The battery sounds perfectly normal to need a replacement. How does it look engine wise? Does it leak anything? Is it oddly clean? EX: Dealer saw gasket leaking so they pressure washed the oil off and put on the back to black to make it all nice and squeaky clean just to hide it until your 10 miles down the road and your noticing oil leaking. Rovers are known for oil leaks but if your paying a pretty penny for one it better not leak for a while! On a side note: small oil leaks do help keep rust down if you live in the rust belt!

Thanks for your guys input.

The dealer is about 250 miles from me, should I have someone (mechanic) go in prior to me driving there and check it out? Focus on (front brakes, differentials, engine leaks)?

I will also inquire about a warranty with the dealer.

One other thing, whats a fair price in your opinion for this vehicle? '08 LR2 HSE, 55K, new tires, 9.5/10 condition (supposedly) .. Trying to negotiate over the phone and anyone's expertise would help!

Thanks again!

I'm of the mindset to always have a mechanic give a vehicle a once-over. They'll notice things we might miss. It's a minimal cost for some peace of mind, and the opportunity to avoid a car with issues.

I wouldn't go higher than $20K. Although if the closest one you can find is 250 miles away, perhaps there an "exotic" premium in your area. Around here Rovers tend to be a bit more popular than other parts of the US for some reason.

Hmm, weird! I wouldn't sweat it. Hold out 'til you find one at a good price. The LR2 is a wonderful vehicle (the perfect mix of small SUV, luxury and off-road) but no sense in over-paying.

I leisurely traded mine in for my VW Passat last year. I've really enjoyed my LR2, trudging through mud, beach sand, everything!

We leased our 2008 for 3 1/2 years and then bought it from the bank for $18. Replaced breaks. Our gas tank sending unit went crazy and it took a long time for the dealer to get the correct part. We're at 77K and loving it! And, as others may remember, we went out and bought a 2010 as well! Enjoy!
