A/C compressor malfunction causing check engine light?
Have a 2011 Freelander 2. A few weeks ago A/C starting humming on full blast. We still used it on Low and it blew cold. Now the check engine light came on with a rubber burning smell. Could it have finally went and now caused check engine light to turn on?
Burning rubber smell and AC problems hints at an accessory belt issue. Check the condition of the belt, since it drives the water pump if it fails you'll quickly overheat the engine.
The CEL was most likely caused by the coils/plugs, not the AC. The CEL is mainly emissions related equipment, or anything which would make the engine run badly and pollute (misfires, bad timing, etc). CEL will typically not come on for accessory issues like AC, PS, etc.
