I've been looking for an OEM roof rack for my LR2 for a long time now. They have them on fleabay but $600+ and with only one cross bar (what did LR think we would do with one solitary crossbar???)
The other day I checked car-parts.com to see if any racks from wrecked LR2's were available, two hits came up and no one would ship. Two days ago I checked again and BINGO, found a set in Washington state, and they would ship. $200 with shipping included and all the hardware. Yes! He shoots! He scores! If there are any cosmetic issues I still have the paint I used to switch the fender vents from tacky silver to tactical matte black.
get new bolts! Also, from LR, there are two (removable) crossbars used to carry weight and 1 (fixed) crossmember used for rigidity. It does not take weight.
its a known wear item. Replacements are found at Thule.
Have you seen the theme of the strengthening of the other bolts? Of course, those guys carry much more load up there than me.
I’ve been mulling over doubling up the cross bars…. call me crazy, but how much fun would it be to have a platform for a lawn chair, at the beach.
of course the other issue is finding a ladder…
A tip for anyone reading this thread and considering doing the same -- make sure the junkyard removes and sends you the washers and threaded studs that were inserted into the factory-drilled holes in the roof so you can mount rails. Without that you may have to spend upwards of $100 to buy a "fixing kit", p/n LR006610, that includes parts you may already have. Turns out the folks I bought the rails from had removed those parts and bagged them thinking they could make a buck on a separate sale. I managed to "convince" them otherwise.
