There has been a rash of catalytic converter thefts in my area and the police recently arrested some folks with a rental storage locker full of cats (see photo). I understand that certain types of vehicles are a prime target because they have a higher concentration of the precious metals in their cats, and they have easier underside access to cut them off.
I used to think the belly cover on my LR2 was a PITA to take off/on when needed, but now I'm glad to have it! Besides providing protection from road hazards, it also discourages thieves who probably don't want to spend the extra minute to remove the cover bolts when the car parked next to mine doesn't have a cover.

It's what happens to non-essential deplorables when there's anything that screws with their income. Most normal people think of maybe starting their own business or going wherever the work is. First thing these jackwipes think of is turning to crime. You should see the hundreds of braindead scams on Craigslist. You're right, the bottom plate does discourage them some. In my house, it's the 9mm M&P Shield and the prominently displayed Marine pistol expert sign on the window of my home office, facing the driveway.
Problem here in SOCAL too. I was actually thinking of replacing a couple or maybe all of the splash guard bolts with tamper-proof torx... that would probably slow them up if they didn't bring their whole tool-box (if they even have one).
I also live on a cul de sac, that might discourage them too since if the cops show up there's no way out.
