Default Flex Brake Hoses

The LR2 service schedule says to replace the flex brake lines every 6 years on a preventive basis. I'm looking at part #'s LR040770 (front) and LR008149 (rear) for the hoses.

Has anyone done this themselves? Is the banjo bolt integrated into the hose, or separate? Did you get replacement crush washers with the hose or have to buy separately?

If you go look at these parts on eBay the pictures do not show the banjo bolts. Those are never integrated into the hose. You discard those and the crush washers because you are supposed to get new ones with the hoses. On eBay the description says they do, but the pictures do not. I strongly recommend you ask first before buying them.

Not my solution…. go to a fasteners and hosing shop. buy the best fasteners and hosing you can afford. Go to a machine shop and have it assembled. You’ll be done in 1/2 day and with the savings, go to the pub.

There's no reason to go to the expense of any shop to have that work done. The hoses are easy to find and cheap, under $20 each, and it looks like they come with all the necessary hardware.

Get the stainless steel versions and be done with it. Motul 5.1 while you are at it.

The hose must be flexible, not rigid. It flexes as the arm goes up and down. Stainless steel will not do.

There are stainless steel flex hoses, it's a woven sheath so to speak. Check out HEL brake lines. They make them for the Freelander 2/LR2.

Be careful!

For the 2008 model there are two versions of the rear caliper, the older one may use a tapered thread for the hose, the newer is a straight thread (with an oring?). I think it changed mid- MY and I assume a later MY's use the straight thread.

Atlantic British sent me the wrong ones, and they never could figure it out... shortly after my issue, they just stopped selling the rear hoses. If you can't get clarity on which hose you need, just get the rears from the dealer, referencing your VIN.

"Stainless steel" brake hoses are actually teflon sheathed in SS to protect the teflon from abrasion, etc. They flex less than rubber so you get a crisper brake response. Potential downside... in some systems the rubber hoses may be designed to provide a shock absorber action in the event of a panic stop. Removing that flex might over-stress some other part of the system and cause a failure during a panic stop. I use SS/teflon on all of my cars but stick with oem rubber on my wife's cars.
