Lucky. It could have been much worse.

I had specifically *not* installed aftermarket nylon/SS hoses on the LR2 because of wife and panic stops. The rubber hoses flex more and that's *supposed* to be part of the brake system's ability to adsorb a panic stop. Nylon/SS might eat into that design capacity.

I use nylon on my cars, but I know to not stomp quite so hard.

 

The incorrect rear hoses are labelled "Hutchinson". They are a straight-thread banjo fitting, I confirmed that the calipers and the new hoses are NPT just like the fronts. The threads in the rear calipers were chowdered up from the straight banjo bolt, so I ordered new calipers to be safe

I asked the question because they were hard to tighten when I installed them. Now I know why.

I now suspect that all LR2 hoses are NPT at the caliper end, and Atlantic British just sent me the wrong ones... and subsequently removed them from their site after assuring me they were correct. Should have known, they didn't put it writing, I had to call them so they could lie off the record.


The front hose that leaked also appears to have an incorrect fitting on the caliper end where it leaked. Both front hoses are obviously designed for the LR2, right length, rubber doodads, and hoke fittings. But the other old front hose (and all the new ones) have a 14mm hex on the NPT end, while the leaky fitting had a larger hex and was a different design. I'm guessing the fitting was wrong for the hose so it didn't seat well when crimped. So quality control from the factory. It installed fine, the NPT threads were correct and I guess I didn't think much about the larger hex when I installed it. Just grabbed a different wrench, figured it was some British thing


The replacement hoses from Rockauto are by Dynamic Friction, and appear to be quality.

For reference, here's a photo of the front brake hose (caliper side) I purchased from RA. The thread diameter is 10mm and the hex diameter is 14mm.

 

That matches the good hose, and that's what it looks like. Also matches the ones I just got from rockauto.

 

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not too keen on buying critical safety products for my wife's car from a Chinese company run by people who think the sun sings...

 

They might be the OEM's on your car right now ... but don't lose any sleep over it

And the sun does sing. You need to get into harmony with your Chi.

 

Repairs completed. Used Ultra-Power rear calipers and Dynamic Friction hoses, both from RockAuto. All went together easily and works fine.

 

Congrats! I've been ordering more from RockAuto lately, too. They had a not-so-great rep many years ago, but I've found them to be very good for both research and purchases.
