My 2013 Freelander 2 (I'm in Australia, I believe LR2 in this forum), dropped the bearing in the transfer case (PTU) and my mechanic has said this resulted in damage to the casing and would require another transfer case.

He doesn't want to get invloved with used/rebuilt trasnfer cases, only a new on, which is beyond my budget.

The Freelander is a 2.2 litre diesel and the mechanic said the trasnfer case I require is LR 040657.

I have been trying to source one and wreckers come back with different part numbers such as the OEM part number.

I have located one transfer case which moulded in the casing is FOMOCO 7G9N7L486AB, and on the webpage another number 7520120590. Am I correct in that this is a Ford transfer case? It is out of a 2010 Freelander 2, 3.2 litre petrol model.

Will this transfer case fit in my Freelander?

There are quite a few transfer cases available at US salvage yards. You can find them at car-part.com. You can also search that web site for yards in Mexico and Canada. Two catches: lowest price for one in good condition is just under US$1000, and finding a yard that will ship to Oz may be a challenge. If you have any friends over on this side of the pond, try finding a yard that is close to them by postal code and have them ship it to your friend (or have your friend pick it up), then from your friend to you.

 

To answer your question directly, yes it is indeed a Ford transfer case. Many parts on these vehicles are Ford parts, or Volvo parts made in a Ford factory. Ford owned Land Rover at the time.

 

2010 is a different "series" of production. If I were you I would make sure it can be returned for a full refund if it doesn't fit. Or look for one from the same series year.
