Next take a close look at the various drive shafts, did one get damaged or even dented? That could throw it out of balance. I can't recall if there are any rubber dampers installed on the LR2 shafts, but if those come off it can make low-freq vibration.
Thank you. I agree with you on the wheel bearing behavior. And that's a good thought about the driveshafts. Our son is 17 and while he's a good driver and doesn't drive all that much, it's possible he damaged one though they're really protected up there above the exhaust in the tunnel. I did a quick visual inspection of the full length of the driveshaft and ends. All looked solid with no obvious signs of damage or deterioration, but I'll get a better look once it's up on jackstands.

Default Solved: wheel bearing

Just to close this out with the solution. It was indeed the right rear wheel bearing. I replaced it with one from Rock auto, and the noise is gone. Those chassis ears paid for themselves in this single repair.

I borrowed a FWD wheel bearing removal kit from AutoZone that had the right size discs and sleeves to work on the Land Rover’s rear bearings, fortunately. I didn’t have to remove the knuckle. The biggest pain in the *** in the whole job was getting those parking brake shoes reinstalled.

Congrats and thanks for posting back with solution! So often we never hear back on the fix.

PS - I lived in the West End of Richmond from 1982-89.

Awesome! It’s a great little city. I’ve lived here since 2019, after moving here from Colorado. My wife to be was here with her kids, so we will eventually move back to Colorado.

One more note that this Land Rover spent most of its life in California and then Colorado until 2021, so there was no corrosion to worry about. I have a slide hammer, and it made short work of getting that hub off.

Want to hear something strange? My LR2 was originally sold in Cape Cod and the family who owned it spent a lot of time at the beach. When I bought it I vacuumed out a ton of sand, little kids' beach trinkets, etc.

The other day I took it to the auto shop at the local Air Force base, and paid $5 to use the lift so I could put Liqui-Moly gear oil additive in the rear diff.

Then I examined the ENTIRE frame up close. All of it. Virtually no rust. Blew me away.

Don't know where he was born, but he had a Boston area accent. He would take a drive in the "cah".
Small world.

Yup. Bashton. Voted most annoying accent in the US.
