Exclamation Oil Leak-Cracked Valve Cover 2013

Recently went on a long trip and towards the end noticed a burning smell on my 2013 LR2. Once I got home, there was an oil puddle after a few minutes of rest. Took it in this morning, seems I have a cracked valve cover and oil visibly came out during the diagnostics when the accelerator was pressed. Has anyone else had similar issues? I'm really curious as to why the valve cover would be cracked. It only has 68,xxx miles on it.

That's a new one. Overheating? Is it the valve cover or the valve cover gasket?

If it's a crack in the cover and not a leaking gasket it was probably a bad casting from the factory. Had a defect from day one and hot/cold cycles over time caused it to expand and eventually fail. A static, non-structural part like might not get the sane QC as say the crankshaft.

BTW, post pictures of the crack, please. I think most of us would like to see what that looks like.

Hi all, I don't have pictures with me but the resulting valve cover crack was due to a Camshaft issue that is apparently notorious in the LR2. The camshaft issue is well enough known by Land Rover to put out a technical service bulletin. In the process of getting the camshaft and subsequently the valve cover replaced.

Any more details than just "due to a Camshaft issue"???

Situation: noise rattle noise evident from engine and/or the malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated, and diagnostic trouble code presents

Cause: stopper in the intake camshaft variable cam timing actuator becoming detached, leading to VCT actuator not functioning

Ouch. That sound like it translates to "bad day."

You would be correct. Apparently LR2’s have this problem quite frequently. Curious what long term effects others have seen or experienced from it.

First time I hear of it, but then again I've only owned mine for just under 18 months now.
