P0016 and P0018 DTC's Rough Idle
#11
I had to get a different Laptop with the shop manual to look up the codes
P0018 --> possible cause Solenoid (This is the intake cam sensor)
P0016 --> possible cause doesn't include the solenoid (This is the exhaust cam sensor)
There are no other codes for Crankshaft to Camshaft correlation so the above information has to be correct
I still think you should swap the sensors.
It is likely you need some new parts but maybe 2 instead of 3
Remember you can get Volvo parts if they are cheaper
How many miles are on your LR2? If the Brake Vacuum pump doesn't leak then the previous owners likely used good oil and unless you have galactic miles I am struggling to believe that you have a timing chain problem.
Good luck
Paul

Hello,
So just swapped cam sensors, cleared codes, ran it for bit, same old P0016, P0018. I did soak the plunger end of the VVT in some penetrating oil. THT code didn't come back even after a trip around the block. Valve train clicking though I noticed. Ive got 114k miles with 4000 miles on this oil change. What next...lol

If one of the position sensor had failed then it should had eliminated one of the codes.
But since both codes are still there I wouldn't replace the position sensors.
Replace the Variable Valve Timing Solenoid
Here are some part numbers
30731116, Volvo
31251224, Volvo
36002690, Volvo
7G9N9M424AA, FORD
LR011224 LAND ROVER
Remember the engine was built at a FORD plant and used by LAND ROVER and VOLVO
So all of the above are interchangeable
The GATES VVS194 is a good choice for about 70 bucks

And look at that it works on VOLVO's and Land ROVERs (and likely a European FORD that we don't get here)

Hello... In closing I did replace the oil control solenoid. Found a Gates VVS194 for $66.00 and runs perfect. Turns out the P0016 and P0018 are triggered by the bank 1 and 2 (intake cam for VVT diagnostic purposes) are triggered by the intake cam not being in sync with the exhaust cam. It did take a bit for the ECU to sort itself out but all is well now.
