Rear Diff Failure
So the rear diff in my 2008 LR2 is going bad. I have 67k miles on the vehicle, so it's not under warranty. The official problem is a bad bearing for the pinon gear, which is a problem with 2008. So if your is still under warranty I would have them check it out. It makes a moaning noise in the rear, which is how you can tell. I have quote from a local shop in Carrollton TX, and I am getting a quote from the dealership. I'll keep you updated.
Oh and if anyone wants to re-gift a rear diff that they got for Christmas, then give me a call.

Just curious, I know Rover is having lots of dif problems, I believe some of it has to due with the fluid schedule change, have either of you ever changed your fluid?
As for the repair, are you looking to get estimates on just the pinion bearing or a complete 3rd member?
Also, Getting an estimate from the dealer is setting yourself up for a huge, "HUGE" estimate that you shouldn't even consider.

We have taken it to a few shops, as well as the dealer for a quote. With regards to this issue, the only difference between the dealer and other shops is the service rate, as most people order the part from Land Rover. The diff assembly comes as a unit, so you buy the whole thing. Normally I would fix the pinion bearing, which is the part that went bad; however, some damage has occurred with the ring and pinion gear, so we are replacing the whole thing. No one found a rebuilt or cheaper component at the other shops, and the price difference between those shops and the dealer is about $150, which really isn't much. You could probably do it cheaper if you pulled the unit and went to an axle shop, but I don't have time for that. With regards to the rebuilt part, if they do have one, we did learn that Rover has changed the part number on the replacement unit, which could indicate there was a redesign. If you want to know what we were quoted pm me.
Dan,
For what it is worth, Most vehicles, especially 4wheelers get the gear oil changed every 30,000 miles, that is what what required in al Discos and other Rovers in the past. That being said, I think Rover has dropped the ball with the L$2's, 3's and 4's with not requiring it and that is one reason for the extremely high failure rate of both the front and rear diffs.
For the little differnce in repair, have the dealer do the work since they have a one year unlimited mileage warranty.
Just curious, how much are they charging and have you considered a used guaranteed diff?
