A tip for those who have the same brain damage as I do.

Today I tried to open my sunroof to dislodge some ice between the roof and the roof rack. Sunroof didn't fully open. And then it wouldn't fully close. It would close about 80% of the way and stop, and then would not fully close, leaving a very annoying 1/4" gap. Nothing I did would fix it, so when I got to work I did the un-stupid thing and cleared out all the ice by hand.

I then opened the sunroof and it went back all the way. I closed it, and it closed all the way.

Whatever module controls the sunroof thinks that if it gets blocked, it must have hit the factory stop and that's how it should be.

Thank goodness stupidity is not a crime or I wouldn't be here to write this.

 

I'm super leery of sunroofs on older cars, had some issues in the past.

I try to cycle them regularly. But I only do it on sunny days, and not right before road trips. I try to not open them on road trips... 1500 highway miles with the roof stuck open in variable weather ain't fun. Plastic garbage bags makes a lot of noise at highway speeds.

 

The sunroof is likely the easiest device in the car to fix.
