Towing camper ?
Have 2008 lr2 and want to tow camper.....a 1954 12' aluminum "canned ham" restored camper.....weight less than 2500 lbs ...total length 15'.....don't want too over load the lr2 ..... Thanks TW
Hi,
I've been towing a 20' airstream, 3500lbs so it's right at the max weight for the LR2. The truck performs flawlessly, I think the active suspension helps. I don't tow much over 60mph (CA speed limit is 55 for towing). The trailer's been in the family forever, I remember my old man wrestling with the handling in our truck in the 70's; the LR2 eliminates all of that.
The trailer has brakes, so I had to add a brake controller. First I installed the OEM towing harness (4-pin, easy DIY), then had a shop add in the brake controller and 7-pin plug. Worth noting that you can install the OEM wiring harness, but it will not work until the dealership activates it. I think they charged me 0.5 labor. You can't activate it yourself (computer controlled).
I installed a Hidden Hitch aftermarket hitch bar, bolted on with no mods (the OEM hitch requires some cutting or the rear valance). The hidden hitch is limited to 400# tongue weight which is a slight issue for my trailer (I just load it aft CG). The OEM is rated for up to 500#.
