Default Transmission Fluid Leak

I had the car in for other work and the shop reported a leak from the transmission case seam. I have noticed a few spots on the driveway.

That's irritating in a vehicle that doesn't have a disptick or easily accessible filler.

Very occasionally it's had a hard shift driving around the neighborhood, just assumed an aging valve body. Or could that be low fluid.

Anybody experienced this? I assume sealing the case would be a huge project? Our "master vehicle plan" involves keeping the LR2 for a couple more years before replacing it. It's used only for local driving now, not road trips.

I do change my own fluid, so I could with some difficulty do the fill procedure to top it off occasionally

Dang. Well, long shot, but it could also be a leak associated with the transmission fluid cooler and associated hoses. Are you sure it's coming from the case seal? Also, did you replace the transmission drain plug washer when you changed the fluid yourself?

And you're right, I have never owned a car without a transmission fluid dipstick/fill hole, until the LR2.

The other strong possibility is the fluid pan. They’re installed using sealant instead of a gasket, and they can leak. If that ends up being it, spare yourself the pain of a Scamazon pan + gasket, and get the reinforced gasket and reuse your factory pan. Ask me how I know ;-p

Looks to me like the fluids coming from the area where the starter bolts to the transmission housing.

I assume there's not supposed to be fluid in there in the first place, so maybe a shaft seal leak?

There's no gasket between the starter and housing?

When you assume…

Drips on the pavement, obvious leaks around the casing, hard shifting when driving; and you continue to drive it?!
I didn’t see how many miles are on the vehicle. And neither did you mention your servicing pattern/schedule with the transmission fluid.
Good luck with that.

About 185K. Have changed fluid every 40K (starting at 100K) myself, with the correct Aisin stuff, most recently in 2022. I'm only driving it as needed to test.

The leak is small, but might add up over time.

Added a couple quarts, then it drove fine. Ordered orings for the level plug, checked that and it was over-filled so I let the excess drain out (at the right temp). Then it shifted hard again after warming up. I'm going to check the level again in case I somehow goofed that up, but like I said I've changed to fluid before and know the procedure.

Only thing I'm wondering is my jack didn't quite get the wheels off the ground so when I cycled through the gears the wheels and driveshafts didn't turn, not sure if that matters but I got a bigger floor jack which I needed anyway so I'll try that.
