Default Two key fobs on the same car?

Hi all,
I am buying a 2009 Land Rover LR2 tomorrow, so I would be a family of Land Rover.
And I am excited but also a little bit scared since you know

The owner says she has only one key fob.

My question is this:
1) Can I get two key fobs on this car? (Because my wife needs one key fob)
2) If yes, how can I make another key fob? (not from the dealership)
3) One of 5 lug nuts in each wheel is unique, so I need a lug nut extractor(?) (I don't know its term). How can I get such an extractor?

Thank you in advance to the land rover good samaritans!

1) Yes, you can have a maximum of two key fobs for the vehicle. Aside from needing one for a second driver, you should always have a second key fob in case you lose one.

2) See this post for a lower cost DIY solution to programming a key fob:
https://landroverforums.com/forum/lr...e2/#post825040

Also note that the key fob contains a "hidden" metal key that slides out from the bottom. It's used to unlock the driver's door manually if the battery is dead and the power locks don't work. This key needs to be cut to match your door lock, so you'll probably have to take it to a locksmith for that step. I think they use the other key as the template, so have both of them with you.

3) You said "one of five lug nuts in each wheel is unique". My best guess is that you're referring to a locking wheel nut. The current owner should have the key socket for the set. It's typically kept in the glovebox or the spare wheel well. If the current owner doesn't have it, or doesn't understand your question, then something is fishy about this owner. Are you sure that you're not buying a stolen car? Only one key fob and no wheel key? Hmmm ... I would check the VIN with the police as part of your due diligence in this transaction.

Thank you for your kind and informative tips.

Yes, I referred to "a locking wheel nut."
Let me try to find its socket set in "the spare wheel well."
Or I think I need to remove them in a barbarian style and replace them with regular nuts.

The owner, an about 60-year-old woman, looked like an honest person.
She said that she got only one key fob when buying her car from the dealership.

I am not good at electronics but let me try to program a key fob.

Thank you again!!

A new FOB needs to be taken to a dealer for programming. There are other ways but since you say you are not a technical person, go to the dealer.

Assuming it was an LR dealership, this sounds even more suspicious. I cannot imagine buying a car from a dealership of the same brand and not getting two keyfobs. The dealer can make a second one at a fraction of the cost a customer would pay for it.

I don't think she meant a Land Rover dealership.

You may be correct. In that case, it's just another used car lot.

Thank you all for your kind replies!

One more general request is that I am wondering if you guys may share with me:
1) the youtube channel(s) which present how to fix the problems of LR2 or general Land Rover cars
2) the websites from which I can buy the OEM parts or the reliable ones of LR2 in USA (or UK) (e.g., water pump, engine oil filter, transmission filter, etc)

I thought you said you're not exactly a DIY'er. I would suggest you look for referrals and find a competent mechanic for your car in the local area.

As to parts, the consumables you buy at your local parts store or online. More important stuff should be bought OEM from a dealer or an LR-specialized parts shop online.

As has been stated before on this forum, LR owners tend to become part-time mechanics

Relevant videos on Youtube will be found using multiple searches with variations of keywords, just like any other topic. As your 2009 LR2 is based on the Volvo P3 platform and has a Volvo engine, you will find additional useful videos searching for Volvo instead of Land Rover LR2. The European version of the LR2 is the Freelander 2, so that's another keyword variation to try.

As Fly said, you can buy OEM from dealers who offer an online store, usually at a discount from what you pay over the counter. Other specialized parts shops pop up on a Google search. And Amazon and eBay offer many parts. In particular, eBay is sometimes helpful for research where listing photos provide additional insights on used parts that have been removed so you get a full view of what it looks like.
