Default 06 with trans code P0731

I am new to working on Land Rovers and honestly don’t really care for them but my girlfriend loves them and I love her so I’m stuck with it.
A little background. I have been turning wrenches literally since I was 7. Owned a repair shop for 10 years until the now ex wife depleted the accounts. I’m not some back yarder trying to fix this thing simply stayed away from European vehicles with my shop and don’t know much about them.
The issue:
06 LR3 4.4 v-8
She backed out of the driveway and when she went into drive it hesitated a several seconds and then “bumped” into gear. She pulled back into the garage and waited til I got home to check it. I ran the codes and p0731 incorrect gear ratio was present. I reset the codes and tried it again only to have the code reset. I watched the data and it’s showing in first gear when in neutral and when you clear the code then place it in drive the computer says third and starts fluctuating between third and second and occasionally shows first until it finally bumps and stays in third.
This on any other vehicle sounds like a module somewhere gone haywire but as stated I don’t know Land Rover.
Any idea where to start?

Can you scan the actual TCM?

I have an icarsoft LR V2.0 that allows me to see the data related to the transmission. That’s all I have for scanning a LR3.

There should be a fault stored in the TCM that give some clues. The code you are reading is from the PCM if I'm not mistaken.

So you are getting a check engine light associated with this code?

I can see all the data from the TCM but there is no fault code other that the p0731. I get a warning on the information screen that says “transmission fault, limited gears available”
Now that I’m checking it I’ve noticed the alternator light pops on also. Start the engine and the voltage shows 13.8, let it run a few seconds and it stops charging, shut off and restart repeats the symptom. Seems like something electrical is having a PMS fit!

Could be.

I highly recommend you buy a GAP IID tool from Lucky8.

Going through this myself and folks like Abran are invaluable to working through it.

By the way It wasn’t a informercial just a recommendation for the right tool for the job.

Default You won't get much traction...

...talking like that here, @Bowtiemen . Abran is arguably our most knowledgeable and helpful member, and most of us here have a GAP tool because they are essential.

I suggest the Gap because we can get a full picture of whats going on as it reads codes in all of the ECUs you have in that vehicle. If you plan on being able to fix anything that truck throws at you get a GAP. If you want to have us guess and try to help, we can do that too.

It could be as simple as a voltage issue.
