Hi All,

Bought a LR3 HSE with about 115k on it a few months ago. It has been a good vehicle with no issues until recently. A few weeks ago I was driving about 60mph and felt a constant vibration (not through steering wheel). I pulled over thinking I had a flat and all tires looked fine. Got back on the road and the vibration was gone. It has been fine for a few weeks until yesterday it did exactly the same thing. I had been doing between 60 and 70mph for about 30 miles and suddenly it starts to vibrate again. I pull over, get going again and it is still there. I pull over again, start again and its gone and I have not been able to replicate it again.

This morning I went under the car and checked the drive shaft carrier bearing for play and it feels tight. I can get the drive shaft to move up and down where the carrier bearing is but it feels like the rubber mount, not the bearing itself. Is it supposed to do that?

On doing some research I have also found that it might be the rear diff or programming?

Do all LR3 HSEs have the locking rear diff?

No, in fact most LR3s do not have a locking rear differential. I doubt that is your problem though. An intermittent vibration like this pretty much exactly fits the description for a software calibration issue that these trucks had.

I would say step one is to have the engine and transmission software updated, this can be done at the dealership, or at a Rover capable independent shop.

The drive shaft center support is rubber, and does have a little bit of play in it.
