Hi, I am getting a strange tapping/flapping noise from the dash area of my 2009 Land Rover LR3. The symptoms are when the blower is on it will no make any sounds unless there is a high wind then it starts making a loud tapping/flapping noise. When I turn the blower off it goes away unless there is a lot of wind and it will keep making a ticking or flapping noise. It basically adjusts to the amount of speed and wind but not rpms. I took it to a dealer and they stated the blower motor has a bearing out. I took it to another offshoot of Land Rover where they only work on on Rovers and he stated that is would do that all of the time not just when the wind blows. He stated it may be the blend door but the wind should not make that flap like its doing. He stated that he thinks something is in the air intake area just below the window where the wipers are but would have to remove it to find out.

This is my 8th land rover and there is always something simple or stupid but trying to find out what it may be. Also, the symptom started when my rear air conditioning went out but said there is only one fan upfront so you would be hearing it in the rear of the car not the front.

Hoping there are some anwers out there.

 

Have you no pulled the cabin air filter? It has pretty much direct access to the inlet under the cowl. Open the hood and you will see light coming in if you can manage a way to look up when the filter is out. Heck, it could even be the filter causing the issue. Also the rear AC has its own separate fan.

 

Thanks, I will look a little harder at the filter. The rear fan is located in the rear correct? I wasn't sure if there may be two up front but could not see that from the diagram.

 

Yeah, the fan is basically part of the rear HVAC module as sits below the left side storage bin in back. Has a heater core, AC evap and fan along with a blend door.

 

Here is a crazy notion....are you sure it has anything to do at all with the HVAC?

WIND may be a key contributor here. Once I was returning from a trip to Hell's Canyon in OR and while driving through a heavy crosswind my exterior A-Pillar trim was making a noise similar to what you describe, and at one point even came loose and almost flew off! I had to have my son hold it down (window cracked) until we could stop, at which point I taped it down and eventually replaced it.

So maybe check your exterior A-Pillar trim pieces.

 

Was just about to mention the A pillar trim, mine broke all the clips and the slotted piece that holds the clips and was flapping in the breeze.
Lowest clip was still good so i got some plastic wall plugs that fitted the holes and siliconed them in then used screws with plastic furniture crew cover caps that i had left over from fitting flares to my old D1 - that sucker isn't going anywhere now.
