Any of you have a ladder on your LR3? Is so, is it usable? When I load up the kids and gear for trip I'm going to need to put stuff on the roof. At least one kid is going to start skiing so I'll need to get skis up there.

I'd like an easy and reliable way to get stuff on and off the roof. Not sure getting to it from the back is the best way. Also want something that can take my 200# climbing up and down it.

 

I use it all the time and it works great, I weigh about 165, no flex.

 

I have a Front Runner ladder and it hold my 215 pounds with no flex and no issues. If you just have crossbars, then I don't think the ladder would be very useful (and definitely not for skis). If you have a roof rack, even then I don't think the ladder is essential, but it does make it easier to get to the center of the rack (which would be quite difficult otherwise) and provides a very useful handhold to hoist yourself up on to the bumper. I'm pretty tall so the bumper stand provides a lot of access for me... for shorter folks, the ladder might be necessary to get to the back of the rack. The biggest advantage for me is that I can climb up on top of the roof rack with my daughter and lay up there and watch the stars or do whatever...

 

Where do you lay? Hopefully not on the glass!!! It's been known to crack under the pressure....

 

i have an expo rack and I laid a 3/4 aluminum floor which I can stand on and put stuff on my rack without worrying about dropping things onto my glass roof. The ladder also was very useful for my bro in laws to climb onto a sailboat on stands at the boat yard. Ladder, roof to boat.

Lol. Don't think I would be brave enough to try laying on the glass. I've got a Fronrt Runner Slimline II roof rack that easily supports my weight. Been considering a rtt recently too, but don't know if I'd get enough use out of it.

 

I have wanted a RTT for a while now; but don't want to commit to a roof rack. I also don't want to "wear" the RTT year-round so I'd want a winch system in my garage to help with mounting and dismounting.

Roof rack, RTT, winch....I feel like I'm in for $4000 at that point; and I don't go out into the boonies nearly enough to justify the cost.

 

That's the problem. I can't justify it right now. However, if I manage to convince the wife to take the family on a 3 week cross country tour (spending a lot of time in CO, UT, NM, AZ, etc.), then I could justify the cost vs. motel rooms for every night. Don't think I'd feel like pitching a ground tent every night... Sadly, she's not a camper, but a RTT is "up high, away from the bugs and creepy crawlys... right?" More justification.
