Default Battery charger for gap tool updates

Gap Diagnostics recommends that the vehicle be on a battery charger while doing updates. Battery discharge during an update can render a vehicle doa. A battery tender or small home charger are not recommended. What are you using to charge maintain your battery while using the gap tool? I have drained my battery a few times while searching for and clearing codes. The local Land Rover dealer uses a portable power supply. I don’t want to spend a fortune but I would like to find something that will give me confidence that I am not going to kill my battery every time I hook up my gap tool. Thanks. Phil

Anything quality will cost you. You are looking for one that has a "flash program" setting. Keeps your voltage at a constant 14.2 volts.

I don't have a GAP tool as I own Faultmate 2 Extreme but for updates I have purchased a CTEK 25000 few years a go as it has a supply mode with constant 14.4 V. Some updates take surprisingly long time to complete. I don't use it often, mainly for battery recharge nowadays, but our LR3 is sure thirsty , when it comes to power need. Just when you open the door current draw is almost 25 Amps and this is basically what you will need doing updates. Current draw for diagnostics is usually 25 Amps as well.

Why isn't a battery tender recommended? Just not enough amperage?

Holy Smoke! $700, I am better to make friends with a local shop, drop some donuts and a $20 every time that I do an update. The trickle chargers just don't have enough power to keep the "lights on." Phil

CTEK 25000 can be currently own for only 200 bucks off A*****n jungle. it was not the case back then when I bought it. In any case you will need a steady load of 25 Amps for updates and diagnostics in which simple trickle chargers just can't deliver.

Nice deal on the ctek 25000. Does it have a flash mode. I looked it up but couldn’t find the answer. Thx. Phil

I just use jumper cables to the other rover when doing reflashes.

I've had good results using a cheap 12V regulated power supply designed for CB radios. I've mostly only used it on my E46 BMW but the concept is the same, a decent amperage power supply that won't shift voltages on you. Similar to this: https://ebay.us/45WSPk Get a cheap set of jumper cables and cut off one end to wire to the power supply to make the hookup easy.
