Default check engine light comes on

SO my check engine light comes on, and at first I thought is was my gas cap, because when I got down to a half tank of gas it went off but when I filled it up it went on again. There seemed to be no problem so I drove it for about ten day, then all of a sudden in a down pour it started shuddering and limping along so I pulled off the road and had it towed to a mechanic, he tells me the next day that there's water in the oil, how is that possible, it never over heated and I only bounced around town with my LR3 and it ran great. Looking for any possible reason. Thank you.

Have it taken to a second mechanic maybe? And with no codes the CE light means little right now, could be anything! Basically, need more info.

Simple test is to check dipstick and oil filler cap for a 'milky' looking substance. If so, could be head gasket. Another simple test, with engine cold, loosen overflow tank cap, start engine and see if there are bubbles in the coolant system, if so, more than likely a gasket.
