Default Considering an 07 LR3

I currently own an 04 DII. Thanks to the people on this board, has been a pleasure to own and work on. It's in great shape and w/ no major issues at 118K miles now. (I've owned it since 87k.)

However, I'm considering adding an 07 LR3 to the family in the Spring/Summer. My hang up is that they don't seem as easy to work on. True or not? Anyone moved from a DII to an LR3 (or own both) that can compare and contrast (beyond esthetics obviously? )

what sort of work are you talking about? replacing major components (half-shafts, suspension parts, etc.)?

I haven't had any major problems and you can see my thread on the major/regular service I've been doing; not too hard (so far!). It has 81,700mi right now, which in my book isn't too high.

Great thread! Thanks; That pretty much addresses most of my concerns. The "work," I'm referring to, is regular maintenance and repair: Plugs/wires, thermo/serp belt/water pump, oil/filter change, transfer case oil change, diff oil change, air filter brakes/rotors, etc.

So, again, you're thread looks as if it's just as straight forward as on the DII.

I'm not familiar with the LR3 drivertrain, so I have to ask: Are the factory propshaft u-joints grease-able/serviceable or are they sealed? Does it also have a double cardan like on the DII?

Front: single piece with CV joints at each end (no u-joints). Six bolts on the flane to remove their from the t-case output and front diff input. Manual only has instructions for removing, 'cleaning the cimponents', inspecting and replacing. No service from what I can tell

Rear: two piece, two CV joints and one U-joint at the rear diff that is supposedly 'sealed for life' and not greasable. This would be a weak link and probably should be replaced with a greasable u-joint. There's a support bearing too, since the shaft is two pieces and very long. Again, six bolts on the output flange, four torx bolts on the rear u-joint at the diff.

That's reassuring. Thanks again for the insight and the post link.

Great thread, appreciate the experience shared. I have a 2007 LR3 with 83kms on it. My greatest concern is the suspension. I hear a lot about air suspension to coil suspension conversion is this the way to go?

Maybe with the older Discos and RRs, but not so much the newer rovers. I haven't heard of someone doing it to an LR3.

I just purchased an 07 LR3 HSE with 33K. Been only 3 days but love it so far. I am not a mechanic so I am at the dealer almost every time there's a problem. I will be at the dealer next week just for them to do an inspection and I'm praying they don't find any problems. One thing I am concerned about and I'm hoping other LR3 owners can weight in here. My undercarriage is noisy. Just a loud hum coming from the underneath the vehicle when I drive at any speed. I could have swore an LR3 I test drove last week made the same noise. Anyone out there want to confirm or deny this is normal? Thanks in advance. Patrick
