coolant leak, tighten down your thermostat housing
I have been noticing a coolant smell on my 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE. I have crawled over and under trying to track down the source. I noticed a coolant trail that appeared to be coming from the water pump. I cleaned off the residue and monitored the area to confirm. Of course, I found nothing. I still would notice the coolant smell. I noticed a couple of small droplets/drips sitting on behind the passenger side of the thermostat housing on top of the intake manifold (only a very small amount on around the thermostat housing itself, I also noticed a couple of dried drops on the driver's side. I did a pressure test and had a very small amount of leakage on the passenger side and a moderate leak on the driver's side section that houses the thermostat itself. I tightened the two screws on the passenger side (both were equally loose), they were at least 3/4 turn from tight. The three screws on the driver's side were at least 1 full turn from tight. Once tightened down, it appears that the leaks have been fixed. Funny how those screws seemed to loosen up. It is the original thermostat housing on a 30k mile engine.
All the best. Phil
