cooler box 2005 LR3 HSE
Our cooler box recently malfunctioned. When the toggle switch is in the "on" position, the light will come on and for a second or two and then click off. It will sit for few second, come back on for a second or two and then click off again and repeats. Ideas? Phil
It could be the tiny little control module. But do you have ANY other power issues? Loud cooling fan on the engine for example? The box is 100% independent besides being on a fuse. Its a very simple Peltier cooler with a computer board that only observes vehicle voltage. There is no temperature control. So it simply turns off when voltage drops below a set point, typically higher than standby battery voltage so when the vehicle turns off and the alternator stops the voltage drops and the cooler shuts off after a short while. In my truck I have two batteries and notices the cooler will run for minutes after the truck is off.
So either you have a larger voltage supply issue or the cooler control board is on the way out.

Not saying there was any correlation, but this was my recent experience with a Cooler Box that stopped working for a while, then started working again.
Midway into a trip to AZ last summer, our AC stopped blowing cold (fun). Then came on again. Same Off/On on return trip.
Cooler box was not working since.
Had a recharge done a few months ago - our refrigerant was 25% of capacity.
I also charged up the battery shortly after, and Cooler box just started working again for our AZ trip last week.
AC blew ice cold, and cooler kept our drinks cold.
So try topping up your AC refrigerant, and charge up your battery?
(assuming the fuse is OK)

My apologies for reviving an old thread but I just wanted to add to the post below as I have just experienced pretty much the same thing.
I noticed my A/C was not as effective as it used to be when I first got the vehicle. Typically in the afternoon hours. Then I noticed my coolbox was also not functioning. Whenever I switched it on, I would hear a clicking sound, the light would go on and off repeatedly and of course no cooling effect. I found this post while searching the forums for possible solutions. A few weeks ago I had the A/C recharged and when I tested the coolbox it started working again. I haven't noticed any need to charge my battery though so that has not been touched. So for anyone else experiencing this issue I guess having your A/C looked at is good place to begin.

I believe the cool-box has a voltage switch as part of its control mechanism. I retrofitted one into my LR3 only to find the switch was not working. The connection is always hot (battery vs. ignition source, though of course fuse issues and wiring breaks can be a factor) and the job of the voltage switch is to allow you to run the cool box with the car off but not to the point of draining the battery and stranding you. My solution was to pull out the control circuitry and solder in a manual switch. Works great, but I have to remember to turn off the cool box.
Best use I have found for the cool box -- which will get 'cool but not cold' is to fill it with ice.

Correct. Its basically an independent unit and when "on" simply monitors input voltage and stays running if it basically detects a voltage high enough indicate the vehicle is running (alternator voltage) and shuts off when voltage gets below a point (assuming vehicle is off, now on battery voltage). This also makes it easy to install into vehicles that did not have it, the plug for it exists in all vehicles. I think its one of the best features for long distance traveling like I do.
