Default Disabling the alarm system in a 2006 HSE

One of the reasons that I got such a great deal on my 2006 in January 2021 is that the previous owners were complaining that the alarm would occasionally sound at random. It wasn’t a regular thing, and the source wasn’t obvious, but it was sometimes embarrassing for them. That worked out well for me and in fact it was over two months later before the same thing happened in my driveway.

My guess is that the issue is related to both door locking mechanisms on the driver’s side. There have been times where the display would show the front driver’s door to be open when I knew it wasn’t, and I’d have to shut it a lot harder to get the warning light off. The rear door can’t be opened from the inside without pulling the latch and the lock lever simultaneously, and I think I’ve gotten a similar false warning on that door as well once or twice. Bottom line, the actuators in both driver’s side doors are my #1 and #2 suspects.

But I’ve got a lot on my plate these days and haven’t yet had the luxury of time to pull the doors apart and check inside the panel s. My workaround until I get a day for an inspection is to lock the doors using the master button on the dash and then close the door (usually the front passenger side) to secure the vehicle without setting the security system. Curiously, closing that door too hard after the dash lock button has been pushed can sometimes fail to lock the door, but by trial and error I’ve learned the precise force needed for a gentle-but-firm shove that seems to please the actuator (I’ll probably be fixing that one too at some point as well).

Problem is that my wife just wants to use the key fob when she’s driving the LR3. So I’m thinking about disabling the alarm so all of these yet unidentified wiring or mechanical faults won’t trigger the horn if my bride uses the key fob to universally lock the LR3 and there’s a false trigger. Ideally the disabling would be relatively easy to reverse when I finally get a chance to work on the doors. Even more fun would be a switch I could install inside the passenger compartment that would allow me to disable or enable the alarm system as needed. Doable?

Thanks,

Nick in Palm Springs

Try bypassing the hood sensor.

Yeah, I saw a bunch of threads pointing to that sensor as a likely cause. Sounds like a cheap and easy workaround, which are always my favorite kind.

Thanks!
