Default driveshaft center bearing

Today I was under the truck with the skid plates off doing diff and transfer case oils. Since I could actually see the driveshaft I reached up and gave it a shove - and it moved a lot more than I expected up/down.

I can't actually see the center carrier unless I remove the the heat shields, but I'm wondering just how much movement is normal. I would think very little.

Before I tear into it, anybody have some input on this?

Pull the shield, you may end up buying a drive shaft I did

what was the over-all failure you found on the driveshaft? I haven't seen any problems at the end joints, but I'm not ruling it out until I do a better inspection next weekend. Man, they are proud of those things at $500+ aren't they?

Just a little movement. To much and you could wear a hole in your gas tank......

Hole in the gas tank you say? Well that would be a 'bad thing'.

One more thing to check on I suppose.

I found an eBay seller selling the center carrier for the driveshaft, but I can't tell how you would replace it.

Any ideas?

I've seen the center carrier available in a few places, but not having looked at the driveshaft yet I don't have any idea how it's changed. I can only assume it's do-able since the part is sold separately.

I found a write-up on doing the center support on D-web. It doesn't look fun.

Given I've got one weekend before a big trip, I think I'll just order up one of the cheap aftermarket complete shafts for $351/free shipping. I'll call in the morning to make sure it's in-stock and will be here by the weekend.

I used the search function in dweb and couldn't find it, also looked at every post back to 9/07' and didn't see it.

Do you have a link? It's not that I am cheap, but I do find it ridiculous to throw away a driveshaft because of a torn rubber piece.

crap....maybe it wasn't d-web? Of course I didn't save the link. I do know it was a british site and the thread was several years old, starting with 'can't be done' and finally ending with 'here's how I did it'.

I'll dig around again if I get the chance.

I agree with you about the replacement, but I'm going to be low on time and don't want to get caught at the last minute, so easier/safer to just replace the whole thing.
