My only choice for ethanol free is 87 octane... Not sure which would be better for my old D3... 87 Ethanol free or 91 octane blend. They are consistently the same price. Im not so worried on mpg, but would prefer what ever was best for engine life...

Tough choice - Id personally choose 91 blend. Anything manufactured since 2001 should be safe to run E10 or E15 blend. E-fuel has a higher chance of getting contaminated either in supply chain and your aging rover not going to like that either. Dammed either way I guess. Good luck!

Default E0

This thread peaked my interest, so I did a Google search and abracadabra: Ethanol-free gas stations in the U.S. and Canada a list of gas stations with Ethanol Free Petrol.

I chose a location that had 90 Octane E0 at $3.49 per gallon (gulp). I had 3/4 tank of 87 octane ethanol mix. Now I don't know about engine life etc, from the gas, but there was an immediate performance increase. The transmission even shifted better. I'm going to try out a few full tanks of this rocket fuel and circle back with what I find.

In Canada we have "winter gas"... i wonder what this additive is. I'm sure our premium summer gas is ethenol free as all the small engine repair places recommend it.

I took a trip 320 mile trip to Boston from upstate NY on Thursday, before I left I filled up with 91 octane non-ethanol gas. I traveled around 72-75mph on the way there and averaged 15.5mpg. On my way back today I used 93 octane gas that contains 10% ethanol, I traveled the same speed as I did on the way there (72-75mph) but average was only 11.1mpg. I guess I will just be using non-ethanol gas for now on.

My other car saw about a 3mpg bump when I filled up with non-ethanol 93 on a road trip to MN some years ago.

Unless I make it to waaaaaaaaaaay upstate NY in the D2, I don't see non-ethanol (e0) fuel seeing it's way into my D2 anytime soon, as it's unheard of to find e0 anywhere in the NYC metro.

Yeah, but it's really hard to compare apples to apples when you're traveling different directions on the freeway... especially here on the east coast.

As an example, I generally get significantly better gas mileage traveling north on I-81 through Virginia than I do traveling south due to the weather patterns. Wind is generally coming out of the SW and toward the NE, which makes a big difference with our cars. In one instance, I drove down from Northern Virginia to Blacksburg and I can't remember what I averaged, but it was probably around 15-16mpg. Then, I hitched a trailer up in Blacksburg and threw what I estimate was around 1500 lbs of firewood (maybe more) in the back and got slightly better gas mileage coming back!!

I found a place just a couple of miles from my house - a Cenex - with 91 E0. Kind of pricey at $2.47 a gallon (for the Midwest), but my LR3 does well on it. On a recent longish road trip I was showing avg mpg of 17.8, but my math on fill-ups - miles/gallons = mpg - I was showing about 16.8 avg. Definately a noticeable difference in performance form the standard 93 octane I have been running.
