Default Is factory radio required for Nav Screen?

I am looking around the internet for an LR3. I have been following the various LR forums for the last year or so. I have a list of mods I hope to make to my car, one of those being to install a double din head unit instead of the factory radio. I would prefer to get a vehicle with factory nav so that i can use that for nav (most importantly 4x4 screen) and the android headunit for music/ IIDTool control.

With that said, can I unplug the factory radio, replace with it with an aftermarket, and still use the nav screen?

If yes, what will I have to do to get it to work?

If no, I plan to place an android tablet/ touch screen in its place. Is it easier to start with the cubby hole or an existing nav screen get gutted and have a new screen mounted in its place?
