Default Front diff fluid

Is the front diff fluid capacity really only 0.64 quarts on a 2006 LR3!? I just replaced mine with a remanufactured and I just want to make sure. It doesnt seem like a whole lot.

It's so debated on here. Some techs says fill to spill while other go to 0.64 I went to just about it pouring out. I change frequently and install the little breather. What was the mileage when you changed out?

On my diff, which has an ARB locker so my capacity might be slightly different, filling till it spills is just over .7 liters, so 70ml more than what the manual calls for. To me that seems almost inconsequential. I always fill 'er up, because I had a leak of diff fluid out of my locker airline, and when I went to check capacity left, I quickly realized you can't, if you added below the plug, nor can you tell how much you need to add back to get .64 liters

130,000mi. Had the rear diff pinion gear bearing fail and the front diff was howling so changed them both out....along with everything else..lower control arms, brakes, swaybar bushings, tie rod ends, drive shafts. It's been on jacks, in my garage, for months waiting on parts. Sometimes was shipped incorrect parts, parts I figured I should replace while I'm at it....it's been a fun time especially without a lift :-/ Dealer quoted me about $9000 to do diffs, brakes, arms. When I got home from dealer I noticed my tranny was leaking, that's another $1400. Since I still owe on it and I really like the vehicle, even after all this. I figured I'd do as much of the work I can. Saved about $6,300 even with the additional stuff I changed out.

I updated the breather on the front about 120,000mi. The diff was bad before I did that.

Anymore I'm changing the diff fluid every 15k miles. Sounds extreme, but I don't care...

Fill to plug line. There was a long discussion either here or on ExPo about LR only saying the "0.6 whatever" because of trying to save fluid and help the environment/stop global warming etc. etc.

Every tech for LRNA I have asked has said they fill to the fill plug. If anything it will help, not hurt. HOWEVER...

Make sure you have an updated breather AND/OR your diff breather is free of obstructions. A good indicator is when you take out the fill plug you might have it literally POP off and hear a pressure change. That means your breather is blocked. If you add even a few mL of fluid more than it had when you opened it, it will heat up and blow the breather off the diff.... ask me how I know. Hopefully most of us have the new breather cap now so this can be avoided in the future.

Yeah just fill to the fill plug. Drive on.
