Default GPS Nav System in LR3

I have a Discovery 3 that i just love. Never a moments trouble.
But the factory installed GPS is complete junk. No cover outside the cities in South Africa even some streets in Cape Town missing! Has anyone installed a real GPS like Garmin in the same slot on the dashboard? is there a model that fits? I can never understand why they don't use well known brands like Garmin instead of no-name rubbish!

What year is yoru LR3?
If you bought it used then you need the GPS update, ALL GPS's need updates from time to time.
I work for FedEx and our GPS software gets updated every 3 months.
So look around online, join a local LR club and share the software or go to your dealer and they will sell you the software.

It is 2007 model. I called the dealer for advice on the upgrade for the software and he was honest enough to say that it really was not worth the money because the changes are minor. Garmin on the other hand even gives you maps of walking trails in the wilderness - never mind roads and city maps!

Your complaint has more to do with the software than the hardware. Garmin has their software program in-house (MapSource), as opposed to LR which has a vendor provided software set.

I don't know if the LR system is propitiatory, or if it will except standard GIS data based maps? There are user created maps out there (on the web), but I don't know how accurate or useful they are.

its a denso based system, which doesnt really have all too many issues. i would try a new disc, the updates do have alot more, expecially with 07 and 08, there was a problem with the discs, and if yours is one that had a problem(certian part number) then the new disc will be covered by your warrenty.
