HELP! 06' LR3 Won't start, AGAIN!
XROVER - Did replacing your starter solve your problem? I am having the same exact issue in my '06 LR3. Clicking sound for a second, everything comes on, including the F in the Shift position indicator, HDC Fault & Transmission error and no start. The mechanic is replacing the starter engine now.

Full disclosure, I did a lot of underhood investigations trying to track this down and did throw some parts at it, so it may have been a combination of issues. Here are the other things I did:
1. New starter, just to eliminate it.
2. Removed the ground straps from engine to frame and found standing water in the bottom of the insulation boot. This one really bothered me, simply because it could definitely affect the amount of juice to get to the starter. My solution was to leave it, but also insert an additional ground strap to act as a secondary ground. My own interpretation of this crappy ground is that many owners replace the battery unnecessarily because of the weak grounding issue for the motor. The dealers will happily replace it because its a simple thing and it's such a common topic that everyone points to it at the beginning. Do yourself a favor and clean up the chassis grounds.
This is a serious YMMV issue, as you can see from the older posts - water can cause issues on the interior as well and they are just as real. In my case though it was the crappy cowl as the likely culprit.
Good luck.

If your battery is in good condition than you need to do the following:
You need to sand and degrease:
1. Battery positive and negative terminal
2. Battery negative terminal to the chassis
3. Power cable connection to the starter

You don’t need to remove the engine undershield or disconnect the ball joint!

The motor is isolated by rubber mounts so there has to be grounding straps to allow that current to return. If you go to the trouble of removing the pass. wheel as noted go ahead and double check those grounding cables from motor to chassis as well - that's where my issue was.
I really believe that the reason new batteries work so often for folks is that they are fresh and able to overcome iffy connections (positive or negative). Eventually, that fresh battery will weaken somewhat over time and you'll be right back to square one. Keep the connections in good condition and I really believe that even marginal batteries will keep these tanks running.
Good info though for sure horvaro.
Intermittent starting issue going on for well over a month now. I changed crank shaft sensor, and fuel pump... still not starting what do i do? what did you guys do? Private mechanic and dealer are perplexed. no clicking sound btw, just crank crank crank, no start... then randomly starts fine...

Our 2005 LR3 was having the same issue with the starter not working intermittantly. It was driving the wife crazy as the LR3 is her daily driver. This last week it started acting up again. I could get the starter to click but nothing else. After 10 or so tries it would start!
Being a do it yourself kind of guy I removed the starter to check for problems there. Bench testing gave the same results as in the vehicle. The starter gear would push up but no turning of the motor. Further investigation found the internal copper contacts heavily pitted. I removed the contacts and cleaned them up with emery cloth and reassembled. Bench tested perfectly! The LR3 starts better know than ever since we bought it used last year. I have pictures of the starter contacts before and after if anyone is interested in trying this yourself. Its nothing that any shadetree mechanic couldnt do.
Hope this helps.
