I guess I am a low mileage owner with 260,000 miles (420,000 km).
I would say I do a lot of preventive maintenance; also engine oil change every 5,000 miles and new oil and filter in the tranny about every 80,000 miles.
Also I change out the oil in the front and rear differentials plus transfer case about the same 80K miles.
I am a fan of new antifreeze maybe every three years to renew the corrosion protection along with a new plastic thermostat housing and new brake fluid when I replace the pads/rotors etc.
I change plugs about every 80,000 miles as well just so they do not get a chance to weld themselves into the head.
I replaced the four airsprings and the valve blocks awhile back just because it seemed like a good idea.
I might be on my third air compressor - two by Land Rover under warranty years ago and one Hitachi by me.
A couple of alternators and a starter and lots of batteries.
It is a daily driver and never off road - bought it to stay on the road and get groceries.
One other thing - replaced the engine belt idler pulleys as the bearings will give out and of course new belts as well as that electro viscous fan that sort of quit the electro part.

I have yet to walk.

I have been following this thread for some time to get an idea of how long they will run with enough love and care. I am second owner and at 190k with all the usual suspect work as well. Regular oil changes throughout on a similar milage plan. And no weep seep leak so far! My only concern is sometimes>75 hearing the tranny make subtle little whining sounds at speed (>75) on highway. So have to ask, has anyone had to or considered a tranny replacement?

Default Tranny replacement - no!

Fortunately, to date, I know nothing about repairing our six speed ZF 6HP26. I do know quite a bit about paying others to replace the oil pan / filter and tranny oil however - every 80,000 miles or so.
I now have about 260,000 miles on the vehicle. Each pan change, the guys complain about burning their arms on the catalytic converter during the oil fill process I gather when the engine is running.

From what I know about automatic transmissions, one does not generally replace the transmission but instead replaces parts within. That of course requires specific transmission knowledge but replacement usually entails lots more money - the trade off.

What I also know is that most Land Rover dealers know a lot about selling new vehicles but very little about anything other than warranty repair.

Fortunately, Ford builds the ZF tranny under license and calls it the 6R60, hence there are independent transmission (not the chain shops) shops that know how to repair our ZF units.

The link below is to a series of pdf files related to the ZF 6HP26 as well as the Ford copy that you can download for further information.

Below is a cut away of the Ford 6R60 clone.
