This isn't my method so I can't take credit for it. For a simple hard reset pull one of your rubber floor mats out and cover the battery terminals while using your jumper cables to connect the cables. Super easy.

If you can, I'd recommend keeping the stock head unit. Third party radios have always been a turn off for me, and the stock configuration I've enjoyed. Worst case you can search for the threads on here about adding separate Bluetooth functionality for music. But that's if you can find a cheap part in a junkyard or something.

As for your fob, I'm hoping you get lucky and it's just got a bad battery. Doing the fob she'll replacement is a definite necessity, just wish those things were a bit more durable.

Hi you guys,

It's been a long time since I replied to you all, but I wanted to give an update in case it will help someone else.

I did the hard reset with jumper cables. It didn't work. I was disappointed, but at least could check it off the list.

I took my 08 LR3 to my local dealership because they said they were confident they could fix the stereo by replacing the phone module. I was skeptical because I couldn't find anything about "phone modules" online, but I said okay. They were to charge $717 for the module, and $180 just to look at it which would be applied to the install in the end. They gave me a new LR2 to drive for the weekend, which was nice, and kept my car for three days, which was okay with me. On the third day they called and said they'd installed the phone module but it hadn't worked. So I paid $180 for their time and effort, said thanks, and ruled that fix out.

Then I started buying salvaged radios online. Car-part.com is great -- they listed what I needed in detail and I ordered my first replacement head unit, waited a week, got it in the mail, and installed it immediately. (Replacing the head unit is thankfully pretty easy, total plug and play.) The CD changer whirred and whirred and gave an error, and even though I know I should only be playing digital music in 2015, I still like my CDs. So I sent it back.

Then another one. Both the VUX500560. I got this one in the mail and put it in, and the exact same thing happened: whirring CD player with errors. I wondered if it would be a faulty car connection since the same problem was recurring? But it seemed unlikely; the head unit is self-contained.

The third time I inadvertently ordered a UVX500520/30 from another salvage shop. It came and I was worried that the navigation wouldn't work since it was a slightly different model, but lo and behold I installed it tonight and it works like a charm. Everything operational: CD player, radio, aux, bluetooth. $315 out the door.

Before, I'd been trying to find a solution that didn't involve replacing the head unit, but in the end it was clear that was what it would take. So it took awhile and three tries, but now it works, and it's much better (for me) than $1900 new for both a new stock head unit or an aftermarket setup.

And did I talk about the FOB and how they wanted $450-ish to replace it? I ordered a new shell and a replacement battery from ebay for about $25, and we took apart the old one carefully, but it resulted in full original fob destruction. We unsoldered it off the board (not hard at all) and but in the new battery and then put it all back together, and thankfully it works, good as new. $425 savings, which feels pretty good.

So all's well that ends well. The next thing to tackle is the alarm going off randomly for no reason, which I read can be fixed with a little tin foil in the right place. These cars are fun!

Thanks for all your great advice.

Jennie,

Great to hear you've gotten through it. Sorry to hear you had so many duds from junkyard pulls. I honestly think that it just goes to show that those radios themselves are junkers, and even coming from trucks that may be in the scrapyards for other reasons, they're all about the same age, dying of the same disorder.

Glad it worked, and good luck with the alarm! I've thankfully got nothing to share on that topic yet!

Dave
