Default Intermittent starting issue

I’m having and issue where I’ll turn the key and nothing. Then I’ll try again and it will start. Other times it will start but will have a delay. I cleaned the battery terminals and no luck. I’m guessing it could either be a bad ground, a bad ignition, or a bad starter. I am getting the fault code B1C57-14 (2F). Thoughts?

So I’m thinking it’s the starter because all the electrical works when the key is turned every time. It’s just the starting that is intermittent and some it struggles to turn over, kind of like a bad battery. But the battery seems to be good. GAP has voltage at 13.9 when running and in the 11’s when not.

That being the case, is there an aftermarket starter that will save some $$ over the LR branded unit?

11 volts when shut down is not good. Should be at least 12.4 and ideally 12.6. Double check the running voltage and voltage after shutting down the engine and running the headlights for 5 or 10 minutes. Use a good multimeter.

Ok, I rechecked. According to the GAP tool I have 11.7 when shut down and 14.3 when running (turned over on 3rd attempt). Still thinking battery?

11.7 is a dead battery. Seems your alternator is working but the battery is not charging. Must have an internal open circuit. You need a new battery, the largest that will fit.

Been doing some more reading and it appears my battery voltage should be Al least 12.6 when off. So at 11.7 I’m low and looks like it’s time for a new battery.

Update

Since GAP was telling me 11.7 volts when off and 14.3 when running, I took the truck to Schwab to have the battery replaced. They checked the battery and told me they were getting 12.5 volts when off which seemed weird. I started the truck to show them what it was doing and of course it started right up with no lag. I bought a new battery anyway just to make sure. Again it started right up.

After work, I started the truck and it was back to the same thing. it turns over when I turn the key and then stops. If I keep the key engaged it then starts turning over again and starts up. I am now getting 12.1 volts off and 14.1 running.

So it seems at least I’ve ruled out the battery itself. I’m getting the following codes:

B1D14-15 (2F) Interior lamps 2 circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to battery or open

B1C57-14 (2F) Passive start ignition relay coil circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground or open
B1C57-14 (2F) Passive start ignition relay coil circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground or open

Am I likely looking at a failing starter? Any other way to know?

My understanding is that those codes you're getting a pretty standard (I get them too actually). You can email the codes you're getting to GAP and they can advise too, but check the GAP manual for those codes first.

The starter and starter wiring definitely seems like a next place to look. I recently took my starter out and bench tested it.

Testing the starter
You'll want to try to diagnose as best as possible before removing it as it's not easy on the LR3

Removing the starter on the LR3
Here are the videos I used to remove the starter recently. Having the right tools will be massively helpful.

Thank you. I’ve looked at removing the starter and it definitely doesn’t look easy.

UPDATE:

I finally broke down and took the truck to a mechanic about this starting issue. He indicated it was a failing relay and that he replaced and it was good to go.

And so it was for about Four weeks. But now it’s started to the intermittent starting issue again. I would not expect a relay to fail that quickly unless something is causing it to fail. Any thoughts on what I am fighting here?
