Default land rover specific diagnostic tool

I have decided that I may need a Land Rover specific diagnostic tool to get the the RRS up and running. It is throwing several codes and faults.

It has some warnings on the dash, some flashing lights, etc. It did start up before once before I got all of the wires spliced together. I can hear the fuel pump ramp up and clicking from behind the glove box, something clicks in the engine bay, but the starter won't turn over. I have a transmission fault, limited gears and a big E on the dash where the gear indicator would usually be, and an engine fault showing limited performance.

What is the consensus on the tool of choice? Short of buying one, are there options for rental? thanks phil

IIDTool from GAP Diagnostics. $400 and licensed to a VIN; cannot rent. You have a Range Rover; Pony-up!

If you were in Austin, I'd be happy to share - the standard code reads on IID I believe are not VIN locked, only some of the service functions.

That said, general consensus (including mine) is that it doesn't take long to recoup the cost of the tool if you plan on doing most of your LR wrenching or intend to keep it for a while. The resale market in the tool(s) are pretty good too, so you're unlikely to be wasting your $$$.

will an ultragauge do anything here? aside from clearing the dtc, will it reset hdc or do you need a real scanner for rover?
