I had the battery disconnected from early June to mid August and it wasn't a problem, there is something else happening if you only get the spark once, the ECU has a PROM that will not allow the engine to start if it sees incorrect parameters from certain sensors, but without any error codes to work with, you're pretty much in the dark. 5280LR3 on this forum had a no start problem because of his engine oil temperature sender being disconnected, but that's the only thing I've heard of when the V6 engine was pulled for repair or replacement, mine started instantly, so I have no useful answer for you at this time. I'll try to see if I have any other documentation...

Aha! I stand corrected! It is sort of curious if everything is timed and connected correctly, then why won't it run? Hopefully he'll find it is something simple...

Status update: After having to take care of some other issues the project was put off for most of Sept to Nov... We are back at trying to diagnose why the engine wont start... Is there a possibility that the engine is not out of a car "VIN E" are there other incompatible Ford engines that are visually identical to a "VIN E" engine that fits intake manifold and valve covers but in fact had incompatible cam timing? These are the questions I am being asked to post and ask the forum. We still have crank and only brief spark. Backfiring and no start. Suggestions please. We have installed a new LR cam sensor for the LR valve cover, we get signal still but the plastic was cracked on the old one.

From what I am reading in Ford forums "VIN E" and "VIN K" engines are are identical and interchangeable aside from intake manifold differences in the Ford world. Are there any Ford 4.0L engines from this era that would have different cam timing making this an incompatible swap for a LR? Even the Mustang uses a "VIN N" variant of the same 4.0L V6 but what makes it different (intake manifold aside)? Basically I need to identify what I have got is truly compatible since I was sold a Ford engine dressed up as a LR engine.

From all my before swap research, ALL the Cologne SOHC 4.0 engines are the same excepting motor mount bore holes (block), intake manifolds, oil pans/filter mounts, the inclusion or lack of an internal balance shaft, engine oil dipstick length and method of positioning the CPS (crankshaft position sensor). Therefore, aside from checking the obvious like fuel, ignition coils, spark plugs and such, I would try to determine if the commutator installed on the flexplate is in the correct position as it sounds like it is trying to start and then the ECU is shutting it down. However, one should really try to read any engine codes with a Land Rover compatible code reader, that at least will give you an idea of where to start looking...

Everyone must pay special attention to: "5. You must install the flex plate by first ensuring the engine is set to #1 cylinder at TDC on compression stroke, if this is not done correctly the engine will not run and you will be removing the engine to fix it again!"
This was in fact the problem after half a year of denial the engine came back out and the error was discovered. Pictures will follow
