Lost Power Towing Up Grade

So here's a fun one. 2008 LR3 HSE @ ~92K.
Just back from a road trip where I drove up a steep grade (paved, highway, ~4,200' elevation, ~80°F) that was ~6-8% for ~1 mile (guessing here, but close) pulling a trailer at ~4,100 lbs. I sort of bopped between manual and auto at the start, but 1/2 to 3/4 way up I began to lose all power in either mode, until I ultimately creeped to the summit (~5-10 mph), at which point the LR recovered, and I quickly carried on at highway speeds. There were no other oddities on my trip whatsoever.
What the heck happened? I wanted to put it into 1st but putting the pedal to the floor did nothing with the lever in either mode. I can't remember any more specifics about what the dash told me, but nothing was abnormal (warning lights, etc), and there was no place for to pull over to shut it down. Fortunately there were no other cars around, so it was no big deal...
