Default power problem

Hi there, ok ive just got a 2000 freelander ie 1800 petrol,in nearly showroom condition its done 49,000miles,but that is with a new engine.
drives like a dream but wait for it 1 problem towing. it's got no power our caravan is 900kg 14ft, so not big or heavy.but the slitest hill you down to forth or evan third, runs aound is about 40mph,take caravan off and she flys.
so if anyone could give me a idea, what i can do to get it to run better i would be greatful.
local chap who deals with landrovers says it could be airflow needs setting .
any other ideas are welcome.

owner's manual say max trailer weight is 1134 kilos. Don't think you have enough ponys under the bonnet. A lot of US other trucks tell you not to tow heavy loads in overdrive to start with. Obviously wind load can be an issue, owners manual shows some various hitch configurations.
