LR3 65 MPH whine
Hello all,
I own a 2006 LR3 with 100,000 miles on it. Today I noticed when I am driving on the highway and reach 65 mph I hear a whine noise. When I take my foot of the gas it stops. It only make noise when I gas it at that speed or faster. The radio is off.... I just had my rack changed about a week ago. It was replaced with an OEM rebuild. Could this be connected with the noise. Just a thought.... Thanks for any input...

The rear diff. was changed by the dealer at about 80,000. At about the same time, the dealer also changed the brain of the tranny. They had to drop all the fluid to do so. This was all done under warranty. So, I have a rear diff. with about 20,000 miles on it and the fluid in the tranny is also about 20,000 miles old. I also changed the the fluid in the t case at 75, 000 miles. However, I did not service the front diff. as per the recommendation of the dealer. I was told it was not needed. Should I change the fluid in front diff. ? Also, I just remembered that when the Rack was done, I also had the tires rotated and balanced. Thanks

Front diff is about $2200. Holds 22 ounce of unobtainium priced fluid, splash lubrication. Small. D1 holds 3 times the fluid, many change annually if off roading or more frequently, and the LR3 is heaver and more powerful than the D1. Heavier truck, less fluid, more ponies under the hood. Seems like that diff would need more attention, not less. Just like coolant, used to be 24 months, now ten years. And LR4 has oil changes at 10,000.
A university police force in Atlanta has Crown Vics, and they get an oil change every month, because of all the extend low miles donut chomping idling with air conditining on. Rover used to state that low miles short trips and idling was considered arduous conditions and needed more frequent service. So basically Mom's mall crawler is working almost as hard a NYC taxi.
I took my valve covers off, I can see what the previous six owners did about oil changes, what ever was cheap, and every 25,000 whether it needed it or not.
Here is the maintenace schedule, which puts a lot of things way past the warranty period. I'll get off the soap box, rant over.
Also, I used some of this to quiet my differntials and transfer case. Uses a synthetic very long molecule, replacement for sperm whale oil that used to be a component of transmission fluid. http://www.lubegard.com/C-269/LUBEGA...uid+Supplement

Update
I just changed the front and rear diff fluid..... Front diff. plug had normal amount of shavings for 100,000 miles and no large pieces in fluid. The rear had normal shavings for 20,000 miles and no large pieces in fluid. I use Royal Purple.... However, noise still there at 65 plus mph. What should I try next? I tried to figure out where whine is coming from, and found it very difficult to find. By the way, truck drives and shifts great..... I used to get a very slight rear end slap when I came to almost a complete stop and gased it. Now, I think it is gone using the RP... Any ideas on how to isolate the noise??? Thanks

If you can perhaps try it under various load conditions, sweeping right and left turns, up hills, down hills, etc. see if it varies.
It could be anything, perhaps you can tape a pocket recorder up in there... I don't know the answer.
It could be pinion bearings, it could be transfer case. If you pass through 65 and go faster, does it go away, or whine louder, etc.
The front diff is not 2200.00, maybe at the dealer.
