Default LR3 bluetooth module upgrade

So we know the LR3 can take the LR4 BT module, especially helpful for the early LR3s. More phonebook storage, better audio. I am wondering if anyone has tried any other BT modules from other Rovers. Right now there is, I think, just one LR4 module on eBay for $170. But if I widen the search I can find many more modules, such as ones from the LR2, that are of the same design/connections at a much lesser price. But of course the part numbers dont match. Just curious because if I can get the same functionalist for less, why not?

By LR2 you mean a Freelander ? the module should be compatible since the stereo and other dash parts interchange.

Yeah, the Freelander is called the LR2 in the states. I hate how Rover names stuff differently here.

Well its rather old info really. The idea is to swap for the LR4 module. It gives some added features to the LR3. In particular the early LR3s. With the upgrade you get signal strength and carrier name on the radio screen. The whole interface with the phonebook and functions are faster. The audio is tons better, no echo issue. You can have a lot more phonebook entires. The pairing issue with newer phones is resolved (its stays paired). Also the caller name appears in the cluster info screen.

The swap is simple. The MOST network cables just swap over. But the main connector is different. However of the 32 pins used, only two are needed for power. Quite silly they use such a massive connector.

So in short if you can get a D4 module and like using your phone with your LR3 its a very, very worthwhile upgrade. I am not sure if the phone functions show up on the nav display though, they WILL on a Range Rover display making phone book searching tons easier. And you can dial numerically from the screen. I think there is a way to mod the LR3 screen to run as Range Rover setup also. Someone installed a physical switch allowing them to swap software from Land Rover to Range Rover, not sure how that was done though.

This bluetooth thing is part of a larger project though, I have to upgrade the module because there is going to be a change in my LR3 MOST setup and the LR3 module won't work anymore with the new toy.

Default Use the Gap iiDTool

Of course, you could always use your gap tool to re-flash the phone module for many of the same features. It takes about 40 minutes and a good 30 amp power source to avoid running down you battery. I just used jumper cables and left my wife's LR4 running next to my LR3 while the tool did its thing

I did this to both my 2007 SE and 2006 SE just last spring.

Hope that helps.

BUT: if you don't have a gap tool the cost of just swapping the phone module would be the cheapest thing in the short run. Sooner or later you will NEED the iiDTool so you could look at it this way, don't buy the module, and think of this as a $170 discount toward the purchase of an iiDTool

I wish a software upgrade would result in the same, but it will not. For one thing there will be no improvement in audio. If that was all I wanted to do, and had no GAP tool, I could just send in my module as part of an exchange program an LR owner has. He sends you an upgraded module with the newest software then you ship your original back. I dont recall the price, but its not bad. No matter in my case, like I said the LR3 module will probably not even work after I complete this next project.

With all that said, I do need to get an iiDTool. I was hoping they were going to have a Black Friday sale but they did not. So I am holding out again. lol

Who has the module exchange program. I have a 2006 Range Rover spirt. Bluetooth is marginal. I bet tons of complaints for those on the other end of calls. I would love to upgrade my module or swap in a lr4 or newer Range Rover sport module. Thanks. Phil

Dakota, do you add the ability to stream music with the module swap?
