Default LR3 drivetrain noise help

Hello fellow owners.

I scoured this and other forums but aside from a mention of this issue could not find a definite answer, so here goes... Lr3, 2006, 126k miles on the odometer. When under acceleration (gas pedal pressed) in the range of about 35 m/hr to about 55 m/hr there is a humming noise from somewhere in the front of the truck. When the gas pedal is released the hum goes away. Coasting, neutral - no noise. Just when under acceleration, seems more pronounced when going uphill. Nothing at low speeds, nothing at high speeds, or perhaps I just don't hear it at high speeds because of the ambient highway noise.

I know there are humans out there that know about this, any suggestions please?

Thanks.

Can be a lot of things but the most common is your front differential.

Thanks Abran

Diffs do that, don't they... Make noise under load. Bearings would produce a more constant noise

Just curious... When did Land Rover stop putting paint onto the inside housing of the front differential. I assume they became aware of the flaking/contamination issue and changed the methods in the later LRs?

I have a similar noise. It was diagnosed by my Indy as coming from the transfer case. Nothing to fix other than swapping for a new one but said their was no issue driving it unless I just couldn’t stand the noise.

Thank you TennRover, I hadn't considered the T-case... Interesting information as well... I'll keep driving and listening, see if the noise gets worse and if so make a decision.

Sounds like the same noise as mine. Had the diff checked out and it was fine. Drive shaft was fine, no bearing issues. Never hear it on the highway and way more pronounced going uphill. Some days I want to spend the money and swap out the t-case but unless you get a new one I don’t think you can guarantee that a used one won’t have the same noise.

Mine has similar symptoms (08 SE 137K). Is there any good way to distinguish if the noise is coming from the front diff vs the t-case?

I remember some members saying that to help with the noise on the differential one might run a 145 oil in it. I wonder if it applies to the T-case... When I did the oil change I got my fluids from Atlantic British and I think the T-case oil came in a bottle(s) that said Transfer Case Fluid... Not even sure what it was. I trust those guys, so I am not worried, but for educational purposes, would have been nice to know.
