Default LR3 Engine oil

Greetings,
I have a 2008 LR3 with 121,000 miles. Can I switch to synthetic engine oil or should I stay with conventional? Thanks.

Correct! The specification for the 4.4 V8 is WSS-M2C205-A for NA markets, which will be a full synthetic. Mobile 1 probably exceeds that old specification. Actually probably any modern synthetic does. I tend go to with Castrol or Mobile 1.

I’ve always looked for STJLR.03.5003 which, in modern terms, will translate to 5W-30 ACEA A5/B5. It is fully backwards compatible with original, but superseded, ACEA A1/B1 specification.

My understanding is that WSS-M2C205-A doesn’t specify much except that oil should be ILSAC GL3 API SL. At least GL3 is outdated and superseded by more stringent GL5. If you’re in Ford country, looking for WSS-M2C913-D tends to get it right. Not all the oil bottlers license the STJLR.03.5003 spec but instead state “recommended for” instead.

In practice you’ll be fine with any modern synthetic 5W-30 oil claiming A5 (A = petrol engine), GL3 (OR higher number).
