I'm in the same process right now as well. Removed the roof rails, cleaned the gunk out, painted the roof trim since it was very weathered, and will be re sealing the roof sealer and then re applying the roof trim. Mine also appears that it is from the top of the windshield, but from reading other posts it is likely the roof seam sealer that is the culprit. Also I could tell the previous owner of my car put a bunch of sealant under the front passenger side roof rail previously.
Let me know how your project goes. I actually need to pick up some sand paper and rust inhibitor as I saw a small rust forming in the seams. I will take some photos along the way and share them once it is sealed and tested.
After spending about 3 hours removing rails, cleaning, I went over every inch of the seam with with RTV black silicone, I am happy to report that my LR3 is water-free Thanks everyone for your help and I hope this will help and motivate someone experiencing a sweaty front headliner and/or drippy and wet a-pillar.
I'd like to check this out as well. I have damp floorboards on the driver's side. I have already replaced the grommet from the sunroof tube (it was hanging loose inside the cabin) but still got water in over the winter after that. I've ordered the A-pillar fix/kit but am not confident that's the issue either. I also want to paint the roof and hood and would like to pull the rails off to make it easier.
So my question is: how are the roof rails removed? Is it just gently lifting on the forward edge and prying back?
