Short story is my front diff output bearings are bad, vibration at higher speeds. Can see lots of play at the CV tripod end but thanks to me swapping seals often, not leaking. Picked up a used one and due to an unfortunate set of circumstances I did not get the lower milage one I wanted to just slap in and call it a day. Instead I got one with 229k miles. The silver lining is that it is a 2010 reman, so at some point the donor 2006 LR3 got it swapped at the dealer - maybe under that TSB warranty thing. The one on my 2006 I am very certain was never swapped. But even being a reman the miles are high so I am going to "rebuild" the diff in the easiest way possible and only do the output bearings and seals, including the pinion seal. I will not replace the crush sleeve when doing the seal although I do have one on hand. The pinion bearing feels like butter and there is zero play. Based on other threads from around the world, and there are very few, this is common and a few folk do a half rebuild like I am. And I do plan to rebuild my original too and with that one I think I will replace the pinion bearing.
Side note: The interior coating of this used reman looks perfect. I thought they no longer applied it at some point, but that is not the case. The early diffs had an issue with it not adhering properly to the castings. Not sure if a casting cleaning issue or the coating itself, but the issue was fixed and it was in fact still used.
So before I waste any time on this used one I am wondering how it looks to those that have gone down this road before. Nothing has been cleaned yet. I think the gears look excellent with minimal wear. But what do I know. So whatcha think? Good to move forward with this one?
