Lr3 Power Steering Gear
Gents: My LR is spewing Power Steering Fluid and so I just purchased a re-built rack. I've not done this before and I've reviewed the workshop manual.
"remove and discard seals" - uh - okay. Anyone have an idea what said -seals look like so I can have them on hand to replace? I assume they're not tradition o-rings.
It then says "disconnect the high pressure line at the pump". I don't see WHY i need to do this - wouldn't i disconnect it at the steering gear ?
I plan to tackle this tomorrow - Terrified.

The o rings are probably from the lines going to the rack.
It's not that bad a job.
You need to be ready to remove the outer tie rods from the wheel knuckles. Undo all the lines going to the rack. Unbolt the rack. Sometimes it helps to remove the engine oil filter.
The reman racks normally come with inner tie rods on them. Mark the position of the outers on the old rack and copy on the new to keep the steering wheel in the relative same position.
Bleed the system, and then get an alignment.
Good luck.

Well... I’m done putting the power steering rack in ... sorta. Took me two weekends. I struggled with so many hard to reach bolts. If you have big forearms and are doing this in your driveway, be aware. (Bolt on steering rack. FML but thx Abran. Banjo bolt on the pressure lines is in the tiniest space ever!)
Unfortunately, it seems I’ve done some damage to my suspension. The car won’t raise, the steering does not seem right at all - seems very tight as if the power steering isn’t working properly. I’ve got the brake light, hill decent light, and the suspension light on now.
Two questions.
1. Anyone know how to bleed this system ?
2. Did I pop from from front air struts by leaving this car on jack stands for a week ? Or are their air hoses around the area of the rack that I could have accidentally skewered ?
Oye.

I did at least 15 without calibrating then had one with a fault. So now I always calibrate as a preventative.
